Figure 18 — Weather Depiction Chart · FAA-CT-8080-2H, p. 2-17

On the Figure 18 Weather Depiction Chart, a station plotted inside a shaded (hatched) area indicates what conditions?

Why: Figure 18's own legend states that shaded areas mark IFR conditions — ceiling less than 1,000 feet and/or visibility less than 3 miles — while a contoured area without shading marks MVFR (ceiling 1,000-3,000 feet and/or visibility 3-5 miles), and areas with no contour at all are VFR.

  • Swaps the two contour categories — the chart's own legend assigns MVFR to the contoured-but-unshaded areas, not the hatched/shaded ones.
  • Ignores the chart's printed legend entirely; shading on a weather depiction chart encodes flight-category ceiling/visibility criteria, not station density.
