Figure 20 — Sectional Chart Excerpt · FAA-CT-8080-2H, p. 2-19
Figure 20 shows an area off the Virginia Beach coast labeled "WARNING W-50B." What does this designation mean?
Why: Per the FAA study guide, a warning area is "airspace of defined dimensions, extending from 3 NM outward from the coast of the United States, containing activity that may be hazardous to nonparticipating aircraft," charted with a "W" followed by a number — exactly how W-50B is labeled on Figure 20.
Confuses a warning area with a prohibited area; prohibited areas bar all flight and are charted with a "P" and a number, not a "W."
Confuses a warning area with a Military Operations Area; MOAs are charted by name (e.g., "Devils Lake West MOA"), while warning areas are charted with a "W" and a number, as W-50B is.
