Why does the FAA study guide recommend that a pilot listen to ATIS, ASOS, or AWOS, and then monitor the tower frequency or CTAF, before operating near an airport?
Why: The FAA study guide states: "a pilot should listen to ATIS, Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS), or Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS), if available, and then monitor the tower frequency or Common Traffic Advisory Frequency (CTAF) to get a good idea of what traffic conditions to expect."
Invents a landing-clearance request requirement for remote pilots; no such Part 107 rule exists, and small unmanned aircraft do not request landing clearance.
Confuses situational-awareness monitoring with the separate, formal ATC-authorization process required under § 107.41 for controlled airspace; simply listening to a frequency does not constitute that authorization.
