Under 14 CFR § 107.29, lighted anti-collision lighting visible for at least 3 statute miles is required for small UAS operations —

Why: 14 CFR § 107.29 requires anti-collision lighting for operations "at night" (§ 107.29(a)(2)) and "during periods of civil twilight" (§ 107.29(b)). Neither paragraph imposes a lighting requirement on standard daylight operations, so daylight operations may be conducted without it.

  • Over-applies the lighting requirement to all operations, but § 107.29(a)-(b) limits it to night and civil twilight operations only, not standard daylight hours.
  • Gets the scope backwards by excluding night operations, when § 107.29(a) requires the lighting at night as well as during civil twilight.
